Paul Laurent Watchmaker
Paul started in the Industry from an early age as the message boy for his Father John’s business. He then moved on to repairing clocks in the school holidays and started his 5 year Watchmaking Apprenticeship under the watchful eye of his father and other employees of the firm.
Paul completed his Correspondence Course at New Zealand Technical Correspondence Institute and attended the Central Institute of Technology, Lower Hutt for the practical component of the course with Watchmakers from Switzerland. He was the top apprentice in New Zealand in his second and final years of his apprenticeship in both academic and practical.
Career Timeline
- 1969: Started Apprenticeship.
- 1971: Graduated from Apprenticeship top of class.
- 1979: Left New Zealand to work abroad as a watchmaker in various places for a year.
- 1980: Brought first retail shop in NZ “Laurents Jewellers”.
- 1983: Expanded to a second store in 1983.
- 1988: Sold business to younger brother Stephen (also a Watchmaker).
- 1988: Moved to Australia and begun working in rural Queensland as a Watchmaker.
- 1992: Moved to Brisbane and set up a home workshop doing repairs for wholesales as well as direct to the public.
- 1994: Moved to Toowoomba and started working for Showcase Jewellers.
- 2003: Moved back to Brisbane and setup our home workshop again performing work for both trade and the general public.
